Tencent and MLB have expanded their rights agreement, marking the first time the Chinese streaming platform will show MLB games in Asian markets outside of China. The new three-year deal will run through the 2023 season and see MLB games featured on Tencent’s international platform WeTV.
According to China News, the others countries covered include Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The other markets have not yet been reported but WeTV currently operates in Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
Meanwhile, the communist Chinese have celebrated the deal with American baseball. As Beijing Enterprises Real-Estate Group Ltd. chairman Qian Xu said in 2017 when MLB made an earlier deal, “We are thrilled to have a strategic alliance with Major League Baseball that seeks to enhance the playing level of professional baseball teams in China.”
MLB has also signed a rights deal until the end of 2023 with China’s Oriental Pearl Media, which operates IPTV platform BesTV in addition to regional cable television channels.
Oriental Pearl New Media’s services cover 31 regions in China and it reportedly reaches more than 100 million households in the country.
“As MLB continues to expand the participation, viewing and engagement of baseball in China, it is critical to partner with the best organisations in the country to form mutually beneficial co-operations,” said Jim Small, MLB vice president, Asia Pacific.
“We are thrilled to team with Tencent, the largest and best distributor of digital sports content in China and a company that is widely admired around the world. We are confident that the assortment of MLB games, shows and events that Tencent will stream will entertain millions of sports fans in China and help continue to grow the sport.”
Tencent’s rights to MLB coverage includes more than a dozen countries and regions, including Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, according to China News. The deal includes live coverage of at least one game per day throughout spring training, the regular season, playoffs, and the All-Star Game.
Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R, KY) took aim at MLB for ramping up its dealings with the communist Chinese even as it pulls out of an American state, saying that MLB is a “little too woke.”
“Your sports league might be a little too woke if it will freely do business with Communists in China and Cuba, but boycotts a U.S. state that wants people to show an I.D. to vote.,” Sen. Paul tweeted on Saturday.
